At Manhattan Dental Health we use lasers for 3 things; Diagnosis, Soft tissue treatment and whitening.

The diagnodent is an FDA approved class 1 laser that we use when we’re unsure of whether an area is decayed or not. It measures the optical density of the tooth and can tell us with a “beep” when the density has been reduced by decay.

We use a different laser to whiten teeth. This process is very effective as it activates the oxidizing process allowing the stains from inside the enamel to effervesce out.

We also use the Laser for tissue treatment such as gum treatment and minor surgical procedures. The Laser is great in these applications because the laser sterilizes and cauterizes. So there’s no bleeding and less chance of infection.

Treating gum disease with Lasers is great. The Laser sterilizes that “pocket” where gum disease resides and can also clean away the damaged tissue. At this level, it is a totally comfortable process requiring only minimal anesthesia, if any. We’ve had great results with this conservative therapy.

We can also use Lasers to heal ulcers and do gum remodeling. What’s gum remodeling? Have you ever seen someone who has a “gummy” smile? Or someone whose gums are just uneven, giving them a crooked-looking smile-line? Well, Lasers can actually remove gum tissue and make those cosmetic problems disappear in minutes

Can’t you use Lasers instead of the drill? Yes you can but in only limited cases. That’s why we still use the drill. It’s faster for you if we use one instrument than 2 and the new electric handpieces are actually faster than the lasers for reshaping teeth. But we’re on it and as soon as it can do it better…we’ll be right there. We’re committed to using the most advanced technologies there are to get the best results possible.
